Lady Stache/Lady Beard Make Up Tutorial
Semiotics of Household Plastics
"Lady Stache, Lady Beard"
The body, sex, and gender are themes which are continuously repeated in art, often with a particular emphasis on the subject matter as being seen as taboo. In abandoning my usual themes of sustainability, and aesthetic, I decided to grow out my mustache and beard hairs as a social experiment to explore the idea of taboo gendered characteristics. Without fabricating anything, I became dependent on my body to produce the raw material for the art; and, in doing so, I explore the relationship of the taboo to the spectacle and conceptualism.
I highlighted and celebrated my lengthy “lady mustache” and “lady beard” using makeup and documented my taboo look in photographs and on film.
"Semiotics of Household Plastics"
This video is an appropriation of artist, Martha Rosler's, feminist video, "Semiotics of the Kitchen" made in 1975. "Semiotics of Household Plastics" is a modern take on Rosler's original video, using both regular and feminine objects which are all made of plastic synthetic material.
